Meliorus–the name is derived from the root of the Latin word meaning “better” or “improved”–is a simple hat. I kept the form straightforward to make sure the finished object is all about the colors. I live in a place with very long, very cold, very dark winters. When fall arrives, both the landscape and the sky turn dull gray. I find that bright colors help to combat the gloom. The brilliant blue, warm orange, and vivid green are reminders of what comes after the season of struggle: rebirth, fruitfulness, and joy. It’s a comforting metaphor for my own annual recovery, and I hope it will serve as a comfort for others as well.
