Mera is a raglan-sleeve shrug knit from the top down. It features an reversible cable pattern (different pattern on each side) edging around the body and the sleeves. Thus, the cuffs and collar can be worn up or down, or a combination thereof for extra versatility. The fit of the shrug is intended to be worn with little-or-no ease.

Because the yarn has some texture in it (plus, yak down is such a warm fiber), the garment itself was worked in a slightly looser gauge to highlight some of the yarn’s texture in the body of the shrug.

The pattern is currently only available through Bijou Basin Ranch, or you can purchase a pdf pattern from their site.

2.29.2012 NOTE FROM DESIGNER: Based on some knitter feedback, I have a different version of this look to accommodate yarn substitutions. These changes are in a new pattern Mera, Revisited. This original version of Mera is still available for sale through Bijou Basin Ranch. Mera, Revisited is not an errata version of Mera; in fact, while it’s similar, the fit a bit different. If you like the look and fit of Mera, I don’t really recommend substituting other yarns. I have not found other comparable yarns on the market that would do the same for this shrug. If you want to substitute a worsted weight yarn, I recommend you use Mera, Revisited.

I have been asked whether buyers of this pattern will be able to receive Mera, Revisited as an update or gratis. Unfortunately, I am unable to do that, since it’s not an errata. Furthermore, I have no way of tracking who purchased the pattern since purchasers of this pattern either bought via BBR’s site or at a fiber show in which BBR was a vendor and the sales do not go through me at all. Thanks!

For those who do not like tighter-fitting arms and would like to make minor modifications to Mera: At the point of separation from the body, you can cast on additional stitches at the underarms. However, make sure that you reduce the sleeves to the number of stitches called for in the pattern before you start the edging.
