This shawl is based on a “mistake rib” that my grandmother showed me years ago. It is essentially reversible, with the satisfaction of three knits for every purl in the body. I’ve never found it as such in a stitch dictionary; whether it’s my mistake or hers, it’s a pleasure to knit.

This shawl is worked from the center neck outwards, with increases at the beginning and end of every row & increases at the center on wrong side rows. The left & the right are mirrors of each other, with a narrow ‘spine’ at the center.

I knit this shawl in a weekend - as did my test knitter! It’s one of the most satisfying projects I’ve knit in a long time.

Because of the limited needle sizes, gauge is approximate.

If you have downloaded the pattern prior to Sept 20, 2010, please note the following error on p3: Row 11 should read: K1FB, P3, K3 until 4 st before M, P4, slM, P1, K3, P1, slM, P4, K3, P3 until 1 st before end of row, K1FB (inc2)
