Mitered squares are a great way to make the most of commercial or hand-dyed yarns with short color runs. Simple construction and lots of garter stitch makes this hat work up fast in worsted weight wool and it will keep your head warm on a cold day. If you have leftover yarn, check out Melody’s Mitered Mittens (www.fibermania.blogspot.com, scroll down the right side of the page for the pattern).

Techniques used: mitered squares; create a welt; decreasing using K2tog; I-cord bind off. Each technique is explained or an internet source for additional instruction is provided.

Size: Ladies size medium; can be made larger or smaller by changing needle sizes and number of stitches cast on for the mitered squares or using a different gauge yarn and appropriate needles.
