I joined the Cult of Noro with a vengeance this winter, when I knit two Silk Garden projects, Jared Flood’s Noro Striped Scarf and Jane Araujo’s Dianna shawl. I am totally hooked on it’s magical color changing ways! I created these mittens to go with my new Noro Striped Scarf, because every good scarf needs a friend, and really, I needed another excuse to break out the Silk Garden.

Notes:

• You may find the way I did the thumb a bit unconventional, but there is a method to my madness. If you were to finish the main part of your mitten and go back to do your thumb, chances are you would be knitting with a significantly different colored part of your yarn, which will cause your thumb to stick out…well…like a sore thumb. (Sorry, but it had to be said.) While my method is not 100% foolproof (you can’t always tell when your Noro is going to radically change on you), I have found it to give my mittens a much more overall uniform appearance.

• You can knit these mittens with or without the lining.

• This pattern is written to be done magic loop style, but feel free to use another method if you prefer.

Supplies:

• 1 skein each of Noro Silk Garden Yarn in two different colorways (pictured in 282 & 276) - I used about 75% of each
• 2 skeins of Classic Elite Yarns Magnolia (pictured in 5435 citron) - I barely used the second ball, I needed about enough to do a thumb
• 1 US4 (3.5 mm) needle
• 1 US5 (3.75 mm) needle
• 1 additional US5 (3.75 needle), (optional)

Notions:

• Small crochet hook (for picking up stitches)
• Yarn Needle for weaving in ends
• 3 stitch markers

Gauge:

• Silk Garden Yarn: 5 sts, 8 rows = 1 inch, with US5 needles, in stockinette
• Magnolia Yarn: 6 sts, 9 rows = 1 inch, with US5 needles, in stockinette

Size:

• Lined: Women’s S/M, Unlined: Women’s M/L
• You can adjust the size to fit you by casting on more or less stitches (in multiples of 4) or by going up or down a needle size. You may also be able to make them larger by blocking them.
