Keep your hands warm!

When I had the original Gingerbread Men Mittens pattern worked up by a test knitter, she said she’d like thicker frosting on her cookies! I had already been thinking about making a Mrs. Gingerbread, so I worked up three more charts and two more mittens. Now you can choose from the Original Man, Thicker Frosting, Mrs. Bread, and unfortunately, Oh No! – a tragic accident. Or mix and match!

PDF includes complete charts for all four versions of gingerbread people!

DETAILS
Skill Level: Experienced
Sizes: for hand width 7 ½” at widest point (A note on these charts: the front-of-mitten and back-of-mitten stitches are separated by a space in the event that someone would like to add additional stitches along edges to make a wider mitten.)
Techniques used: This pattern assumes understanding of knitting in the round, stranded colorwork and chart reading, and Kitchener stitch.

MATERIALS
Yarn: Windy Valley Muskox, Australian Merino, 218 yds, 1 oz (28.5 gm) per skein: 1 skein MC, 1 skein CC. (There was enough yarn left to do thumbs in either color, and to extend cuff if desired.)
Brown version: MC 7002 Vanilla Crème, CC 7011 Chocolate Chip
Red version: MC 7001 Polar Bear, CC 7013 Peppermint Candy

Needles: US 1 / 2.25mm, 40” circular and dpns, or size to obtain gauge. (40” circ is used for Magic Loop method; if preferred use 2 circulars or 5 dpns instead for knitting small circumferences in the round. Dpns were used to knit thumb.)
Yarn needle
Waste yarn
Stitch markers

GAUGE: 43 sts & 48 rows = 4” (10 cm) in colorwork pattern
44 sts & 48 rows = 4” (10 cm) in 2x2 rib

Double-Twist Loop Cast On (for illustrated instructions for the Double-Twist Loop Cast On, see pg. 22 of Cast On, Bind Off: 54 Step-by-Step Methods by Leslie Ann Bestor.) Or alternatively, use the Backward Loop cast on method.

ERRATA:
When I revised this pattern, I moved the beginning of the thumb gusset up several rows so that the mittens / gingerbread people would sit further down on your hands; I neglected to make that change on the chart. Whether you start your gusset on R 17 or R25, they’ll both work; I will leave it to your preference!
