The On The Cables Hat was designed to be a quick knit hat that has texture, style, and structure, but can also keep your head warm on a cold day. The hat uses a combination of the basic cable and cross cable methods. A combination of cabling back and forward over the same set of stitches creates a nice braided cable that pairs well with the cross cables to create a clean and sophisticated look.

The pattern has a variation on the brim for whether the hat is being knit for a man or a women. The variation for women has a shorter brim to give the hat a tighter, cloche-like fit.

While you can use any bulky weight yarn for this hat, it was designed using the bulky weight of each of KnitPicks’ Full Circle (purple hat pictured on front), Brava (light green hat without flowers pictured on front), and Wool of the Andes (dark green hat with flowers pictured on front). Note that the Wool of the Andes bulky required moving up a needle size to using US9/5.5m and US10/6mm needles to get the proper gauge. As with any pattern, if you use a different yarn than those listed above, make sure to create a swatch in stockinet stitch to determine the proper needle size in order to achieve the right gauge.

The flowers used for the hat on front of the pattern are from Jeannie Kubricht’s Super Duper Fast Perfect Posy pattern. The pattern is available for free on Ravelry at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/super-duper-fast-...
