I wanted to design a ruffled scarf, so I made a short ruffled strip for a sample and tied it in a loose overhand knot so it would fit easily in my small project bag. A few days later, I took out the knotted strip, and it looked like a flower motif, so I decided to make more and create a scarf with them. Unlike many knitted motifs that are complicated and require double-pointed needles, this motif is simple and easy to make. Knotting it gives dimension, and self-striping yarn makes the colors flow like they do in a pansy.

NEEDLES
Size U.S. 9 (5.5 mm).
Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm): set of double-pointed (dpn) for I-cord.
Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

GAUGE
Each pansy motif is about 4½“ (11.5 cm) in diameter before seaming.
