Patch I is a simple beanie with a little bit of a unique construction! It’s built around the idea of showcasing a striped or special yarn, even if you only have enough for it for a 75-80yd square patch.

You can opt to show off the specialty yarn against a plain background, or keep going in one specialty yarn to show how the stripes knit up when your knitting changes direction!

The sample is shown with Urth Yarn Uneek Sock against a background of Premier Yarn Serenity Sock Weight. You don’t necessarily need two skeins of yarn to knit this project, though, and it should also work well with scraps.

Materials:

  • 17g/75yds CC, 50-80g/230-345yds MC in soft sockweight yarn (shown in Urth Yarn Uneek Sock CC and Premier Yarn Serenity Sockweight MC)
  • 1 16” circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge. Knitting is both flat and in the round.
  • 1 set of 5 DPNs in size needed for gauge crochet hook for cast-on, 1.90mm or size suited to yarn
  • Tapestry needle
  • Removable stitch markers

Gauge:
Primary gauge is 27 sts and 56 rows over 4”/10cm of blocked garter stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge. Hats get weird if you don’t.

Measurements:
As shown, this hat measures 8(8.5, 9)“/20(22, 23)cm tall and about 8.5(9.5, 10.5)”/22(24, 27)cm across, measured flat and relaxed, or about 17(19, 21)“/44(48, 54)cm circumference. The garter stitch is fairly stretchy, so aim for a little bit of negative ease. Medium should fit many adults, as a starting point.
