Designed as the June 2025 pattern for Wonderland Yarns/Frabjous Fibers Jane Austin Shawl Club.
Near the end of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and her sister Jane are talking. Jane asks about Elizabeth’s love for Darcy. “My dearest sister, now…be serious. I want to talk very seriously. Will you tell me how long you have loved him?“ Lizzy replies, “It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.”
I have always loved the image that stayed with me after reading that for the first time many years ago; an image of Elizabeth and Darcy walking arm in arm in the gardens at Pemberley that she loves so much, stopping to sit on a bench under a flowering tree to read for a while, with a gentle breeze blowing the flower petals down around them as they sit, peacefully, in love and understanding each other well.
This shawl is my version of that flowering tree with the buds and leaves near the top, and the beautiful little petals floating down. Maybe Elizabeth would wear a shawl like this, to keep her shoulders warm while she read, surrounded by the beautiful grounds at Pemberley.
This large crescent shaped shawl can easily be made bigger or smaller by increasing or decreasing the number of repeats for each of 3 sections. Each flows into the next after any number of repeats.
This shawl uses almost every inch of the 2 skeins of Wonderland Yarns Cotton Kiss used in the sample, so I have added a bit more yardage to accommodate differences in individual knitting tension. If playing yarn chicken worries you consider purchasing a bit more than the required yardage.
