Pentaradial is a tam- or beret-style slouchy hat. It’s a textured, roomy topper with pentaradial symmetry and a really nice star shape at the crown! Knit one for yourself; knit one for a friend; knit one to match your pack and take it on a long hike. It’s a good summer knit, being smaller than a sweater or a blanket, and easy to take along with you.

This pattern is written out for one size, which fits most average adults. It lends itself well to handspun yarns (the sample shown is knit from Malabrigo Nube spun as a thin single and then chain-plied), and should also look good in handspun-type commercial yarns of a similar weight (DK to light worsted).

Gauge is 18 sts and 26 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch in the round. Be sure to check your gauge!

The pattern is in the form of written instructions. It includes a schematic, so if you’re not certain about your gauge or the hat’s dimensions, you can compare them to the measurements and shape shown.

You’ll need:
-125-135 yards of dk- to worsted-weight yarn
-a 16” circular needle in US8-9/5.0-5.5mm, or size needed for gauge
-one set of 5 DPNS in the same size needed for gauge
-a tapestry needle
optional: a stitch marker to mark the end of the round.

This personal-use .PDF pattern is free for 48 hours (in other words, through the evening June 11th), or until I return from my ridiculous antic weekend plans. Enjoy!
