This scarf is worked flat on circular needles from the bottom up, increasing 2 stitches every other row with the pinecone pattern staggered across.

Because it is worked from the bottom-up and is an allover pattern, there is very little waste; you can continue knitting until only a few grams remain (and can also make the scarf bigger with more yarn than suggested). This project is a good stash buster, as it can be completed with just one skein of fingering weight yarn.

The left-slanting ( \ ) decreases are worked as a “knit two together through the back loop,” (k2togtbl) and the right-slanting ( | ) are worked as a “knit two together,” (k2tog). Other techniques include make 1 (m1), yarn over (yo), knit (k), and purl (p).

Since this project does not need to “fit” it is more important to find a gauge that drapes well and has crisp lace definition.
