One of the highlights of Chincoteague Island’s year is the Pony Swim and Auction taking place in July. The Chincoteague Colors yarn called for a shawl with horseshoe lace and colors that reflect the sunrise swim from Assateague to Chincoteague. After the swim, the ponies parade down Main Street carefully attended by the Salt Water Cowboys. A truly unique celebration to Chincoteague Island.

This crescent shaped shawl is knitted from the bottom edge to the top. Instructions are written and the horseshoe lace pattern is also charted. Short rows are used for shaping.

Chincoteague Colors yarn in the Channel Collection (DK wt) is recommended. This soft, 100% merino yarn is dyed on Chincoteague Island by Carodan Farm. Pony Penning Sunrise captures the colors of the morning as the ponies prance among the Salt Water Cowboys much to the delight of all who have gathered.

One skein of the Channel Collection DK wt. yarn is sufficient for knitting this shawl. Sizes 5, 6, 7 circular needles 32” in length are needed.

Gauge is not essential for this project.

Skill level is intermediate.
