The perfect cozy overalls to stay warm while exploring! This pattern includes loads of thoughtful details, including two options (with and without buttoned legs), and the most adorable knee “patches”. A properly shaped seat and roomy gusset at the crotch mean that the garment will fit right and accommodate even cloth diapers.

CONSTRUCTION:

These overalls are knit seamlessly and top-down from the waist to the ankles. Short rows are worked in the seat area and a generous gusset is worked at the crotch. The waist stitches are then picked up and the front bib and back straps are worked from the bottom up. For the buttoned leg option, stitches are picked up along the inner legs to work two button bands.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Skills required: casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, short rows, grafting only if doing version with no leg button band (link to kitchener stitch tutorial provided), picking up stitches, binding off.

SIZES:

  • NB (3mo, 6mo, 12mo // 18mo-2yo, 3yo)
  • To fit waist: 16 (18, 19, 20 // 21, 21.25) inches or 40.5 (45.5, 48.5, 51 // 53.5, 54) cm.
  • Garment waist (under ribbing): 16.5 (18.25, 19.5, 20.25 // 21, 21.25) inches or 42 (46.5, 49.5, 51.5 // 53.5, 54) cm.

In general it’s best to go by the child’s actual waist measurements when selecting the appropriate size. You can also choose a size according to how much ease you’d like the garment to have.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 300 (350, 400, 500 // 600, 650) yards or 274 (320, 366, 457 // 549, 594) meters of sport to dk weight yarn.
If doing leg button bands, add 50 (60, 70, 80 // 100, 120) yards or 46 (55, 64, 73 // 91, 110) meters

NEEDLES:

  • US 6 or 4 mm 16” or 40 cm circular needle, or size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge
  • 1 set of matching dpns for legs
  • US 4 or 3.5 mm 16” or 40 cm circular needle or dpn for NB size only, or two sizes smaller than needle size used for stockinette (for ribbed stitch waistband)
  • 1 set of matching dpns for leg cuffs
  • Only if doing leg button band: US 4 or 3.5 mm 24” or 60 cm circular needle, or two sizes smaller than needle size used for stockinette

NOTIONS:

  • 5 stitch markers (I recommend using a different colored marker for the BOR marker)
  • a tapestry needle
  • 3 stitch holders or pieces of scrap yarn
  • 2 buttons 3/4-inch or 18 mm in diameter
  • Only if doing leg button band: 9 (11, 13, 15 // 17, 19) buttons 3/4-inch or 18 mm in diameter.

GAUGE:

21 sts x 30 rounds = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch in the round using larger needles, after blocking.
Please adjust your needle size if needed to achieve gauge
