If you wish to work the pattern in laceweight, but cannot abide using 

so large a needle as 5 mm:

You may use a smaller needle and cast on 8 rather then 6 stitches:

Repeat the following pairs of rows one additional time each:
28/29; 44/45; 58/59; 72/73; 86/87; 94/95

Repeat the 4 row sequence 120 to 123 a total of 8 times.

You may work the pattern as is in laceweight on 5 mm needles and get a suitable shawl.
