A sock yarn striped hat. The stripe heights are generated using a random number generator or a die.

This pattern is free on my NattyKnitter blog.

I’ve been thinking a lot about random factors and how they can be incorporated into knitting patterns. This is my first random pattern, there may be other more complex ones to come.

I used sock yarn because you don’t find many patterns for hats in sock yarn and because I wanted the shortest possible stripe to be really short.
