The soft pleats of this Tunisian Knit Stitch fabric create plush and stretchy insulation.

It’s a quick, one-skein crochet pattern and it’s written for two yarn weights.

  1. Light-to-regular worsted weight/heavy DK (shown in purple) requires an L/8mm Tunisian hook.
  2. An aran (heavy worsted) weight version (shown in heather grey) requires an M/9mm Tunisian hook. I completed each one in 1.5 evenings each.

One long edge of the cowl stretches more than the other while worn, but when measured flat, the cowl looks like a simple rectangle. This increases the ways it can be worn; for example, look at left at the grey one when worn upside down! (The stretchier side is open at top of neck).

Skill Level: Easy Intermediate Tunisian. Some Tunisian stitches are worked into more than one row at a time. It’s recommended that you experience a beginner-level Tunisian crochet pattern before attempting this one. The only Tunisian stitch you’ll need to know is the Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks).

After using this pattern you will know (if you didn’t already):

  • A simple way to create pleats in Tunisian fabric
  • An easy way to build in some ‘accidental’ shaping
  • A way to create useful tunnels for added insulation
  • A fun, quick way to crochet a striking new neck warmer

Note: minimum length of Tunisian hook only needs to be 7”/18 cm.
