If you are wondering what on Earth you should need an Orange Cup Coral for – it’s an invasive species, and it will invade your home, eating up remnants of yarn, especially of the novelty and eyelash/fun fur type! If you should end up having too many of them, you can always mail them to the nearest Coral Reef installation of your choice (the newest one has opened in January 2022 in Baden-Baden in Germany), or you can use them to camouflage small bottles in your bathroom, put a shot glass inside and use it as a small vase, or for storing Q-tips, to collect change (fits a whole day’s worth of parking quarters), or use it as gift bag for small items. Did I mention tossing shirt buttons inside waiting to be sewn on again?

The body of the coral is worked in one piece from the bottom up in the round in sc [US term], the arms are worked continuously at the end of the body in turned rows.

The simplest option is a coral with one arm round and the top rim additionally embellished in eyelash-type yarn, but the pattern contains many more options for versions with two arm rounds and different types of arms, some of which will curl, others won’t, with or without added objects such as pony beads or pop tabs.

The 8-page pattern contains written-out instructions for all parts of the coral, additional crochet charts for the various types of arms, and photo tutorials to demonstrate more complicated steps.
