The Ruby Slippers Shawlette is a narrow, trapezoidal shawlette, knit from side to side in garter stitch with a lace edging. The simple lace edging pattern (in both written and chart form) is easily memorized and fun to knit. The garter and lace pattern shows beautifully in solid, semi-soild and tonal yarns, but the sideways construction will also play up the colors in variegated and handspun yarns. This project is a great way to use that skein of sock yarn that doesn’t seem to work for anything else.

Instructions are provided for weighing your yarn so that you can maximize the amount used, or knit the shawlette at any gauge. There are also instructions for modifying the shawlette to be wider, narrower, or triangular.

This pattern is appropriate for all knitting skill levels and incorporates the following techniques:

  • Left Leaning Increase
  • Double and Triple Decreases
  • Slipped Stitch Edge

NOTE: Test knitters who didn’t make gauge were generally able to get about 20 points in the straight section. The sample shawl at gauge was able to get 22 points. The pattern gives both numbers. Sorry for the confusion!
