This traditional-style sleeveless cardigan is worked in the round for ease of knitting, with steeks for cut openings at the front and armholes. It features enclosed facings to secure the cut edges and allow the use of soft, modern, washable yarn not normally used in designs with cut edges. The result is a fresh, contemporary look to a traditional garment.

It is named for the 19th century Scottish-Canadian folk song “The Scarborough Settler’s Lament”, as it reflects the designer’s Scottish-Canadian heritage, and the colours of the vest are drawn from the colours of the Scottish wildflowers in the song.

The vest is sized with 3-5” of positive ease for each size. Finished size: 33¾ (37¾, 41¾, 45¾, 49¾)“, 85.5 (96, 106, 116, 126.5)cm.

The design uses nine colours of Shelridge Yarns 80/20 fingering weight yarn:

  • 50-100g each of four background colours (F, G, H, I), of similar hue and graduated value.
  • 20-70g each of four foreground colours (A, B, C, D), of similar hue and graduated value, contrasting with the background colours.
  • 10g of one light or bright contrast colour (E), that should ‘pop’ against both the foreground and background colours.

The pattern is available as a kit from Shelridge (yarn + pattern).
