Scribbled Lines headband
Inspired by a box of crayons, this design can be made in as many colors as you want, as a scarf or a headband in any size and any yarn weight, with woven-looking lines of colors scribbled over striping background colors. The contrasting pointed wedges are meant to resemble crayons, pointing asymmetrically into the piece throughout the body.
While the design is purposely meant to be able to use tons of different colors, complete with techniques to take care of the ends as you go and minimize finishing, the pattern also works nicely in as few as three different colors, and it works really great with five or six colors, so you can use as many as you like.
The ties on the ends can be either braided or twisted; for the scarf, these ties mean that you can fasten it into a cowl and wear it lots of different ways. It also makes sizing even more versatile, as you can make a short scarf and tie it on into a cowl!
While the pattern will work in any weight, it’s recommended that you don’t go heavier than worsted for the headband.
This pattern is part of the Coloring Book ebook, which is a collection of knit accessory patterns all designed to to make the most of your colors!
This individual pattern pdf includes both the Scribbled Lines scarf and the headband.
Use any number of colors, three or more; the number you use and the way you stripe them can make for really different looks. You’ll always have a background main color, and slip-stitch stripes (and crayon wedges) in a contrasting color.
It’s recommended that you use mostly solid or semi-solid yarns, but throwing a couple variegated into the mix can look cool. Try not to overlap a variegated CC over a variegated MC, and try to space out variegated yarns between solids, to keep your piece from looking too busy.
This simple shape can be knit in any size. No need to make a gauge swatch, as the piece will be sized as you knit it, independent of gauge!
