Selenite is a crystallized form of the very soft mineral gypsum. Its name comes from the Greek “selene,” meaning “moon”. The crystals are often clear, translucent, or white with a very defined elongated diamond shape. They can be very tiny, though some spectacular ones measuring nearly 40 feet (12 m) in length have been found in the Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of the Crystals) in Naica, Mexico. Temperatures in that cave reach 136°F / 58°C, making it dangerous for humans to visit it. With its reversible stitch pattern and modern asymmetrical lines, a cozy knitted Selenite Wrap provides a more approachable amount of warmth and softness for every day or special occasions, while optional beads add sparkle. Though the project does require concentration, it’s not especially difficult. Beads are added with a crochet hook while working, so no pre-stringing is necessary.
