These stranded colourwork mitts are a quick knit, and great for using up scrap stash yarns.

They call for fingering weight yarn in 5 shades, graded from dark to light or vice versa. Choose shades that have enough contrast from one transition to another - eg light, medium and dark, with two transitional shades - light-medium and medium-dark.

Alternatively choose analogous shades (colours next to each other on the colour wheel) that transition well from one colour to the next.

The mitts are knit in the round from bottom to top and are interchangeable for each hand, with the patterning going all the way around the mitt.

The pattern has 4 charts - shaded from light to dark and vice versa, with a choice of 2 main motifs. There are additional charts with the motif pattern in outline, suitable for printing and colouring to try out different colour combinations.

Sizing: to fit hand circumference 7-7.5” (18-19cm).

Yarn: the mitts call for 5 shades of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift
(wool, 25g, 115yds/105m)
- one ball for the main shade (ribbing and main motif) and small amounts of 4 contrast colours, shaded from dark to light, or vice versa. Allow approximately 10-15g for each contrast shade.

Sample shown in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift:
Background mitt - Eesit, Wild Violet, Damask, Foxglove and Mulberry
Foreground mitt - Eesit, JC Rennie’s Supersoft 4ply in Orchid, Spindrift in Damask, Bramble and Shetland Black.

Needles: circular needles or dpns for knitting small circumferences in the round: 2.5mm, 2.75mm, 3mm, 3.25mm.
If there is no direct US equivalent, the mitts can be knit with US sizes 2 & 3.

Notions: waste yarn, stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors,
Optional: colour wheel, coloured pencils.

Gauge: 29 sts and 31 rnds to 4” (10cm) using 3.25mm needles over stranded colourwork in the round. Take time to check gauge and adjust needle size if necessary.
