These longies are designed to be used over cloth nappies/diapers but if you leave out the short rows you can use them over disposable nappies/diapers or normal underwear. They are designed with 0-1”/0-2.5cm negative ease in the waistband to provide a nice snug fit. The ribbing on the waistband will be stretchy so they will be comfortable with an I-cord threaded through to help secure them. The hips have 1-2”/2.5-5cm of positive ease built in to help avoid leaks from compression wicking and also to allow a little room to grow. If you would like to make a custom fit there are instructions at the end of the pattern explaining how to go about this. Included in the pattern are suggested leg length for shorties or crops and 6 options for finishing the leg including ribbed, garter, moss stitch and ruffle.

Custom- Use your own measurements. No maths needed, it has all been done for you, just pick the measurements you want to work to and CO.

Materials:
245, (275, 310, 345)(380, 415, 485) yards, 225, (250, 285, 315)(345, 380, 445) metres of 100% wool, aran or worsted weight yarn. Suggested amounts required have a 10% buffer worked in to the calculations. If you are using a contrasting trim you should not need more than 2oz/50grams for any of the sizes. 100%, hand wash only, wool is best for the optimum effectiveness as a cloth nappy cover. (Superwash wool or wool blends will be less effective.) Merino or Bluefaced Leicester wool is a good choice because it soft enough for babies. I like to support other work at home mums and small businesses so encourage buying yarn from an independent dyer.

7 Stitch markers. I recommend having different types because you will need 4 to mark placement of increases, 2 to mark short row placement and 1 to mark the start of the round.

Darning needle.

Needles:
US7/4.5mm, 16”/40cm circular needles
US7/4.5mm, 12”/30cm circulars or set of DPN’s for legs, for larger sizes you may be able to use the 16”/ 40cm circular (or 1 or 2 long circulars for your preferred method of small circumference knitting)
US5/3.75mm, 16”/40cm circular needles (for newborn size you may prefer to use 12”/30cm circular needles)
2 US7/4.5mm DPN’s
