This colorful bag is knit flat in glorious, simple, soothing garter stitch. It is not sewn together. The sewing required is to insert a liner, if desired. The only (minimal) in-the-round knitting done is at the very top of the bag.

Technically, you could make this bag and not have to sew even once. However, I recommend that you add a liner to your bag.

The pattern offers two options: make a striped bag as shown in the examples in blue and green, or use the appendix to make up your own bag with any garter stitch mosaic stitch pattern you wish. The appendix allows you to calculate numbers specific to your desired stitch pattern and desired dimensions. The main pattern is written for striping.

I came up with this design to solve a problem kicking around in my brain. I absolutely love bags to carry my wallet, keys, etc. in the summer when I may not have available pocket space on my clothing. I actually have a collection of store bought leather bags with the same shape and dimension. My question was: how do I knit this without sewing it together? This bag will inspire people to ask you: “How did you do THAT????!!!!”

I used DMC Natura Just Cotton because I love the colors it’s available in. You can substitute with any yarn of a similar weight that you like. If you want a bigger bag use a bigger yarn with a bigger gauge.

The pattern uses up all of the two balls of DMC Natura Just Cotton it calls for. You might want to buy an extra ball of each of the two colors you decide to use just in case. If anything, you might like a longer shoulder strap. I like mine rather short.

Visual aids are included for knitting the bag together and for creating a lining.

If you’d like to read more about this pattern, I’ve finally had time to blog about it. Here’s the link: https://yarnblabber.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/spare-pocket-my-new-pattern/
