How do you make a jacket from a square without cutting off any pieces? This pattern will show you how. You are allowed to make cuts into the shape, and join it back together but not take anything off.

The pattern contains four easy outfits for Barbie (and other fashion dolls), which are basically much the same. They all produce similar results but the ways of getting there are different.

Three are knitting, the other is crochet.

If you just want to make simple, pretty, outfits for Barbie that’s fine. The pattern also includes a very basic, mini-tutorial for garment design, using squares and rectangles. It might make you look at shapes in a new way. It tells you how to scale-up Barbie’s jacket to fit a child or adult. It even shows you how a dishcloth shape can become a scarf.

I am making a collection of mathematical Barbie patterns, under the title Sum Wear. Keep checking back to see what else has been added.

This pattern is based on the geometry of squares.

All of the patterns will be using very basic yarns so can probably be made from leftovers.
