Welcome to the Sunshine Charlotte Scarf CAL 2016! This Crochet-Along includes one complete pattern on the first of each month, so it’s the perfect CAL for busy people who need plenty of time to complete each project. I will send a pattern update every month, so after you purchase this pattern, you will automatically receive updates with the monthly CAL pattern.

The purpose of this CAL is very personal for me. In 2015, I resolved to crochet enough scarves to tie them around trees when the weather turned cold this winter. I wanted to anonymously place them where people in need could find them and take them: on trees in the park, on poles outside schools, etc.

However, in May of 2015, my 8-month-old baby Charlotte was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Our lives changed instantly, and I spent all summer at Riley Hospital for Children while my baby underwent chemotherapy. Despite the best treatment available, Charlotte died on July 31. Needless to say, the goals I’d set at the beginning of the year dropped off of the top of my priority list. I was in survival mode, and the beginning of the cold season came and went without any scarves to hang.

So, to honor Charlotte, I am designing and crocheting a new scarf pattern every month. By November, I will have 11 scarves to hang, and so will anyone who joins in the CAL. (Find the Sunshine Charlotte Facebook page for dates and times of our “Scarfing” event in November.) The final scarf in December will be to give to someone you know; let someone in your life know that you love them, because you never know how short your time together might be.
