“What’s to be done with that crazy variegated yarn that you just can’t resist but that scoffs at any and all attempts to knit anything patterned with it? That was the question I struggled with as I started to work with this yarn. I fell in love with the colorway the moment I laid eyes on it (it reminds me of those Brach’s Neapolitan candies from the bulk bins I went crazy for as a kid), and really looked forward to designing this sock. However, the contrast of light cream and dark brown, with light pink and darker rose in between, immediately asserted itself when I began to swatch. Slipped stitch patterns are almost always the way to go when beating a feisty colorway like this into some semblance of submission. Purl stitches also add some interest and break up the colors differently than knits, so a slipped stitch design with a purl background ended up being ideal for this yarn. The stitch isn’t overly complicated, because this colorway would eat complicated for breakfast. All in all, this yarn was a great challenge and the resulting socks are loads of fun to knit.”
