Pattern description from Knitting in Plain English: “One of my students, who was about to become a new grandmother, asked me to design for her a pair of baby booties to match the sweater and bonnet she had made as learning lessons in order to have a complete layette set for her daughter-in-law. That afternoon I quickly scribbled out the simple directions to be made flat with a seam up the back. But I awoke in the middle of the night with a different thought: What a wonderful opportunity to learn to use four double-pointed needles and experience working in the round. In the morning I wrote out these instructions. As you have mastered the skill of translating instructions into finished products, i am omitting the lengthier explanations in this pattern.”

Size: 6 months-1 year

Materials Needed:

  • Small amount (about 1 ounce) (30g) of classic knitting worsted yarn.
  • One set of 4 double-pointed size 8 (5mm) knitting needles 7 (17.8cm) inches long.
  • A ring marker
  • 4 rubber point protectors
  • A tapestry or metal yarn needle
  • 1 yard (91.4 cm) 1/2-inch-wide (1.3 cm) purchased ribbon

Basic booties, with eyelets for ribbon, to match the student patterns: “The Dumb Baby Sweater” and “The Stupid Baby Bonnet.” Yardage given is “a small amount.” Gauge is the same as for “The Dumb Baby Sweater” and “The Stupid Baby Bonnet.” Ignore the names; these make a lovely layette.

Techniques:

  • knitting in the round
  • using double-pointed needles
  • picking up stitches
  • three needle bindoff
