This pattern can be used with any yarn, as the correct gauge is not vital.
If using another yarn, use needles two sizes bigger than what the gauge is suggested on the ball band.

Another suggested variation is to use two different yarns, different in either texture or colour, But make sure they are about the same weight so that they knit up with the same gauge.
