As she rose from the table we had shared, she smoothed her woolen jumper and slid into her coat, shoulder by shoulder, shaking her hair clear of the collar.

“Oh, you can’t have to leave yet,” I said, our coffee cups still half-full or -empty at my hands. But her time was her own, I knew, and whatever she was doing next had slid into the timeline.

She checked her silver watch, her only jewelry, and shook her head. “I have to. Sorry, E. We’ll finish this up another time.”

She dropped a single bill on the table, folded in fourths, and walked away, her heels clicking on the tile. She was just what I had been looking for, and I’d never seen her till today.

A simple, seamless jumper with a kangaroo pocket. Knitting begins with the top of the back. Fronts are then picked up from the back cast-on and knit to the underarm where everything is joined to knit in the round. The pocket is knit along with the body. Armhole and neckline ribbing are picked up and knit.
