This pattern was originally designed for the New Beginnings ebook and it was dedicated to wonderful friend, designer and yarn dyer Elena Nodel, who passed away on June 13, 2017.


The colour of hope Hat is a seamless hat knit from the bottom up with simple lace. The pattern is written in three sizes for circular needles and uses Magic Loop for crown shaping.

Sizes (head circumference):
S (45-47cm / 18-18.5”), depth: 17.5 cm / 6.75”,
approximate total yardage: 115 m / 125 yd
M (48-52 cm / 19-20.5”), depth: 20.5 cm / 8”,
approximate total yardage: 150 m / 165 yd
L (51-56cm / 20-22”), depth: 22.5 cm / 8.75”,
approximate total yardage: 185 m / 200 yd

Gauge:
26 stitches x 36 rows = 10 cm / 4” in Stockinette Stitch with 3.5 mm / US 4 (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Yarn (in one color) – fingering weight:
Sample: Garnstudio Drops Baby Merino (100% Merino, 175 m / 191 yd in 50 g /1.76 oz)

Other materials:

  • circular needles in two sizes – the first in size needed to obtain gauge, the second in one size down (the sample was made using 3.5 mm and 3.25 mm / US 4 and US 3)

  • tapestry needle

  • regular party balloon (to block the hat to the proper size)
