Summary:  Basic mittens for toddlers, with optional embroidered details and I-cord string connecting the pair.  Directions are provided for knitting mittens in the round, or back and forth on straight needles.

Materials:

  • small amount of contrasting color yarn, for embroidery (optional)
  • yarn needle
  • for in-the-round mittens:  4 US size 5 / 3.75 mm double-pointed needles; 4 US size 8 / 5.0 mm double-pointed needles; 2 small stich holders; 3 stitch markers
  • for back-and-forth mittens:  US 5 / 3.75 mm straight needles; US 8 / 5.0 mm straight needles; 2 medium stitch holders; 2 stitch markers

From Knitting for Baby:  These mittens are sure to keep toddlers' hands toasty during cold weather.  The floral or moon-and-stars embroidery is optional, as is the I-cord that connects the mittens and, ideally, keeps them together when it's run through the sleeves of a jacket. ... We give instructions for working these mittens in the round on double-pointed needles or back and forth on single-pointed needles.
