Tulsa has an annual 5K run on Thanksgiving Day. It’s called
the Turkey Trot… and my big brother talked me into running it
last year (along with my little brother and my husband).
Although I had totally NOT been doing any running at the
time, I wanted to be a supportive sister and prove that I still
had it in me to run 3 miles. Simple, right?!
Oh…. How wrong I was.
Although I was setting a much slower pace than all 3 of them,
the favorite men in my life stayed back with me, cheered me
on, and even walked with me when my little legs felt like they
were turning to Jell-O. We crossed the finish line all at the
same time, and I knew that I had something to be very
thankful for!
So. With Thanksgiving approaching again, I get the same
invitation. And for some reason, I accept the challenge
again. Still… with very little running going on for me these
days. But I can’t say no to my brother. He’s driving 9 hours to
spend the holiday with us, how can I say no?! But this year
I’ve decided that if I’m going, I’m at least going in style. I’m
going to be noticed for my awesome hat instead of the red
face and labored breathing that will be going on underneath
the hat. So, the idea for the Tom Turkey hat was born. I think it
turned out to be an awesome little hat. And I am going to
totally ROCK that Turkey Trot!

This hat uses the following yarn (yardage is for the 20” diameter Adult Regular size):
MC – Lion Brand Yarns, Heartland, 126 Sequoia – 140 yds
C1 – Lion Brand Yarns, Vanna’s Choice, 158 Mustard – 25 yds
C2 - Lion Brand Yarns, Vanna’s Choice, 180 Cranberry – 45 yds
C3 - Lion Brand Yarns, Vanna’s Choice, 134 Terra Cotta – 16 yds

Needles: You will definitely need Double Pointed needles (size 9), and if you prefer using a cable needle once the hat gets big enough, feel free to use those too.

Extras:
12mm black eyes – qty 2 (they sell these in most craft stores – used in making stuffed animals)
Stuffing for the head – about a baseball-sized amount.
Cardboard – 5” x 10” piece
