I have a friend who got some bad news. It was the sort of bad news that required a jaunty hat be made for her at once. I was new to making hats, so I decided to make an exceptionally thorough gauge swatch. The swatch was so thorough it turned into a pair of matching fingerless mitts. Instructions for both are given in this pattern.

The hat features clever crown decreases that maintain the threefold structure of the design on the brim, and the mitts sport a lovely thumb gusset. Either project can be completed in a few hours with a single 100 gram skein of most worsted weight yarns.
