These mittens are luxuriously lined with wool or silk roving to provide a yummy warm mitten without all the bulk or fuss of thrumming. They have been designed for knitting in the round with a thumb that is knit as you go.

I designed these mittens 8 years ago after attempting a thrummed mitten to keep my freezing hands warm in the Maine winter. I didn’t have the patience to keep stopping for the thrums and this just seemed like a better way to line a mitten for me.

After spending a good long while redesigning this pattern, it now includes 4 sizes. From Children’s Medium which is great for the 5 plus crowd to a Women’s Large which will accommodate even smaller Men’s hands. The thumb has been redesigned also to include the knit as you go, in the round thumb that I came up with for my Christmas Eve Mittens. If you haven’t made mittens before, that pattern is a great place to start before attempting a lined mitten.

You can use any worsted weight yarn as it will be held double throughout the pattern. If you prefer, you can use a bulky yarn held singly as well. The smaller sizes will utilize one skein, but the women’s large will need two skeins of worsted weight. Also, if you’d prefer a longer cuff and are knitting the women’s medium, you will need two skeins as well.

Mitten Kits will be available in my Etsy store Maine Cottage Creations If you have yarn, and would like pre-prepared roving for your mittens, you can purchase any in my store and just request it be prepped for this pattern for FREE until the end of 2012.
