This is a patio or conservatory cushion (or pillow) cover in garter stitch and stockinet, closed with five buttons and loops. Each side is knitted in one piece. It is made entirely from a scrap ball (or scrap skein) consisting of leftover yarns which are cut and made into a single length with Russian joins. There are four optional edgings: knitted piping, a tassel fringe and two crocheted trims – or you could make the cover without an edging.

Artwork
The Untitled 2400 series is an artwork which explores the combination of the uncontrolled positioning of colour change points in scrap balls (or scrap skeins), the potential of those increase/decrease patterns which create right-angled triangles in garter stitch and stockinet, and the geometrical manipulation of stripes. In other words you get to loosen up your attitude to colour and conventionality by throwing wild combinations of free or leftover yarns into the quick and easy pattern below, and seeing something really rather amazing and beautiful materialize. (Alternatively of course you can purchase a bunch of toning colours in high-end yarns, or use a single wide-striped, space-dyed yarn, and make a conventional version).

The above gauge is a guideline only; there is no specific gauge for this pattern.

Requirements

  • Yarn: Approx 350g (1263 yards (1155 m)) of any DK or 8 ply yarn for cushion cover, crocheted edging or piping. (Extra yarn required for optional tassel edging).
  • Needles: Circular needles of length 40, 60 and 80cm, and 4 dpns, metric: size 4mm, US size 6, UK/Canada size 8. Alternatively, the whole pattern could be knitted on a pair of 4mm x 60cm circular ndls.
  • Sewing thread and needle
  • 8 st markers (one in different colour for beginning of row).
  • Cushion/pillow pad: size 16in (40cm) round.
  • Optional zip/zipper long enough to admit your cushion pad: possibly 10-12in (25-30cm) depending on how squashy your cushion pad is.
  • Optional buttons: 5 x 0.75in/2cm
  • Crochet hook: metric size 4mm, US size 6, UK/Canada size 8. This is for optional crochet edgings.
  • For optional tassel edging: Rug hook or large crochet hook; extra yarn.
  • For optional piping edging: Circular needle or two dpns, size 4mm as above.
  • For blocking: (this item does need blocking!) Tape measure, two paper circles 16in/40cm diameter, box of blocking pins or ordinary dressmaking pins, blocking board or spare surface e.g. a spare mattress.
