Vault Cowl Collar aka Tierceron III

Charted Pattern - Intermediate Skill Level.

A beautiful and elegant cowl collar inspired by gothic architecture; specifically vaulted tierceron ceilings.

Worked in the round, top down, using needle size progressions for shaping. Tightly worked at the top to allow for a standing ‘collar’, growing into a wide soft flow for the lace bottom.

Intermediate skill level project: Requires swatching for gauge/tension and final blocking to ensure proper fit.
Tutorial images for blocking included.
Recommend experience with uneven/moving repeat boundaries, but instructions and clear chart provided.

Materials

3 sizes of circular needles US 8,9,10 (5, 5.5 & 6 mm) 16” (40 cm) long
~ or sizes needed to obtain gauge.

155 yards (141 meters) worsted yarn @ 8-9 WPI
I recommend a multi-plied tight twist OR fat single ply with minimum 50% animal fiber content for memory/stretch.

Measurements

15.25” (38.5 cm) circumference at top edge / 7.5” (19.2 cm) at top edge flat
14.5” (37 cm) measured across bottom point to point
9” (23 cm) height, measured top to tip of lace edge point

Gauge

If you want this to stand and flow properly, gauge is important! You need only swatch/achieve gauge for smallest needle.

Gauge should be tight at the top - to make collar firm not floppy.

Sample used US 8 (5 mm) ~ I knit tightly; if you do not, you may want to begin swatching with a US 7 (4.5 mm)

Goal gauge in p2, ktbl ribbing worked in round =
5.25 sts per inch (2.5 cm)

24 stitches by 29 rows = 4” (10 cm) Rounds/height gauge - not as critical as sts/width

Note that many have different gauge round vs. flat.

Very gently block your swatch (wet, tug lightly to align and let dry flat ~ no pins)
