From the pattern:
I wanted to create a vertical-stripe hat pattern using different colors and textures, but I didn’t want to carry the colors across the back of the knitting. So, to remedy this I worked out this technique of the knitting the separate panels and knitting them together as you go. The technique used to attach the panels as you work creates a kind of homspun look, which I love. The beauty of this hat is that it appears trickier than it is, and there is no seaming at the end. You will get oohs and ahhs from everyone with the unusual, textured hat.
