Vinterfjell Cowl
The design and name for this cowl was inspired by the Scandinavian Mountains in the winter as well as my Norwegian heritage. The name “Vinterfjell” translates to “Winter Mountains”.
I wanted to design a cowl that could be worn as an open top hat/earwarmer (for use with my hair being worn up) or as an adjustable larger cowl to offer versatility in its wearing options, size, style and function based on the wearer’s desire.
An optional i-cord can be made and woven through any of the eyelets on the cowl for the ability to change the tightness and fit of the cowl.
Supplies
Size 7 (4.5mm), 16” circular knitting needles
or size needed to obtain gauge
Worsted weight yarn (see sizes for amounts)
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Gauge
Approx. 18 sts x 28 rows = 4in/10cm stockinette stitch
(it will be more important to meet gauge for the stitch count than the row count)
Sizes
This pattern may be made in two sizes/versions:
the small size will stretch to fit over a 22in/56cm head if not cast on or bound off too tightly.
Small - (88yds/50g without i-cord, 96yds/55g with i-cord)
The small size features a closer fit with minimal excess fabric with an option to wear it as an open top hat/earwarmer for the ability to wear with your hair up.
Approx. circumference of 18in/46cm
Large - (123yds/70g without i-cord, 131yds/75g with i-cord)
The larger size features a looser fit with an optional i-cord tie to adjust the fit and closeness of your cowl. The i-cord may be fed through any of the eyelets of the cowl, offering a variety of choices in fit and style.
Approx. circumference of 22in/56cm
