Mosaic & Lace Knits is an introduction to a technique that I have been developing over several years that brings colorwork into lace using slip stitches. Handling only one strand of yarn at a time, no carrying along the row or stranding, allows development of colorwork patterns without any floats running behind your work and obscuring your lace.

Worked up in amazingly soft baby alpaca I had to work on making sure that the color work pattern did not get lost in all of the fuzziness. Choosing two high contrast colors helped make sure that the visually graphic elements of this design pop!

While the lace isn’t highly visible in these mitts it is what allows the manipulation of the stitches into the traveling willow bloom pattern. The lace also provides some breathing room and flexibility for these mitts which are already super warm due to the insulation qualities of the alpaca.

If you would like to see this pattern in action check out its pattern tour video on my YouTube channel Watch Barbara Knit.

The sample is worked in the colors Sapphire Heather and Finnley Heather.
