Dig all your beautiful hand dyed yarn out of the stash! This pattern is designed specifically to highlight hand dyed yarns. No more wondering if that gorgeous skein will turn into a gorgeous sock. These beauties are worked toe up on two circular needles, and feature a textured background stitch huggingcable.

Winding Path socks are knit from the toe up, with an arch expansion for a great fit. You may choose to use DPNs, two circulars or a long circular for magic loop.

Yarn Note: The pictured yarns are Yarn Love:
Juliet, in Fall Chard (bright multi)
Elizabeth Bennet, in Awakening Earth (green)

We recommned choosing a fingering weight yarn, with medium to light saturation, and a very short individual color repeat. Kettled dyed yarns are a great choice. Very dark/saturated hues will diminish the visibility of the stitch pattern, and should be avoided.

If your yarn has a definite repeat (Often labeled as hand painted or space dyed.) you’ll want to alternate ends to avoid unsightly pooling. To alternate ends, wind your hank into two, equal sized balls. Knit all the odd rounds from Ball One and all the even Rounds from Ball Two. It’s easier than it sounds and really works!

Size Note:
Fingering weight: 9 sts per 1 inch, US size 0 / 2mm needle. Medium width, knit to any length.

  • Due to the arch expansion, and the customizable length, this pattern will easily accommodate wide width with no modifications.

If you have a narrow foot, instructions are given for a minor modification so your sock will fit well!

Errata: Please note, on the previous version of this pattern the sentence: “Knit until you come to the first wrapped st. Knit the wrap with the stitch, treating…” was accidentally dropped from the end of page 3. This has been corrected and the file includes the missing sentence.
