A gently slouchy hat with diamond motifs knit from the top down with a folded brim.

Size: to fit a 51-59cm (20-23”) adult medium head.

Yarn: One skein of plump DK or worsted weight yarn (200m or 219y/100g), ideally in a light or bright solid or semi-solid colour.

Needles:
4 x 5mm (US8) DPNs, or needle size to obtain gauge
5mm 100cm (US8 40”) circular needle, or needle size to obtain gauge
4.5mm 100cm (US7 40”) circular needle, or one size smaller than large needles

This pattern is written to be knit with DPNs for the crown then switching to magic loop however the entire hat can be knit with DPNs, the body with a 40cm (16”) circular needle, or you may have another suitable favourite hat-knitting method.

Blocked gauge: 20s x 26r = 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) in stockinette in the round on large needles

Other materials: cable needle, 6 stitch markers (one should be a different colour), contrasting thread for a lifeline, tapestry needle

Required skills: Knitting in the round with DPNs, knitting in the round with magic loop, long tail cast on, increasing and decreasing, cables, inserting a lifeline

The diamond motif is provided in both written and charted formats.

Notes:

  • If you’re using the written instructions for the motif, the definitions for C3B and C3PB can be found on page 4 under the chart.
  • Blocking is highly recommended to make the motif visible and for the hat to form its gentle slouch.
