Thanks so much for signing up for Allyson Dykhuizen’s Windy City Mystery Shawl Knitalong! This shawl KAL will be released in 5 parts, each part building off the previous one, and will use 2 colors of fingering weight yarn. It will combine stripes and graphic shapes of color, as well as garter stitch and openwork sections, to create a show stopping shawl you’ll be able to wear and style in different ways.

This KAL is being featured during the Chicago Yarn Crawl that runs at the end of July 2016, but all can participate on dedicated forums of course!

Signing Up!
When you sign up for the pattern your download will include this description + clues 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5, as well as yarn options and gauge. The clues will be sent to you through Ravelry and to your inbox as they are released, and a final pattern will be emailed to you when the pattern is finished on August 18, 2016.

Mystery Schedule
The schedule for clues:
Clue 1: July 14, 2016 - Released!
Clue 2: July 21, 2016 - Released!
Clue 3: July 28, 2016 - Released!
Clue 4: August 4, 2016 - Released!
Clue 5: August 11, 2016 - Released!
Final Pattern: August 18, 2016

It’s an aggressive schedule but we can do it! Each of the other clues are it’s own section of knitting.

What yarn should I use?
Any fingering weight yarn will work for this design. You’ll need 400 yards of 2 colors. Because the design relies on graphic elements this will not be able to be converted to only 1 color, but your colors can be as contrasting or as close in color as you’d like them to be. The more contrast you have in your colors the more your shawl will stand out, which you may love! Or you may like to play these elements down. It’s totally your preference!

Some yarn options could be:

  • Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine, 50% wool, 20% alpaca, 30% nylon; 433yds/100g.
  • Medelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% superwash merino wool; 420yds/100g.
  • Classic Elite Yarns Villa, 70% baby alpaca, 30% viscose; 236yds/50g.
  • Classic Elite Yarns Vail, 70% baby alpaca, 30% viscose; 236yds/50g.
  • Manos Del Uruguay Fino, 70% extrafine merino, 30% silk; 490yds/100g.
  • Rowan Summerlite, 100% cotton; 191yds/50g.

Remember! If you’ve got a large gauge you may want to have some extra yarn on hand in case you run out. And no, it’s not important to gauge your shawl - you just want to make sure you don’t run out of yarn so make sure you’re in the ballpark.
