Winter’s Last Breath is a shawl that features the simple of beauty of garter stitch contrasted with a delicate beaded lace border. The elongated crescent shape is knit in one piece from tip to tip. This construction method allows for easy modification of height, length and shape (crescent or triangle). Hand painted and variegated yarns shine in this one-skein wonder!

This project is ideal for newer lace knitters as well as those who are new to adding beads to their work. Because the body of the shawl is all knit, this allows focused learning on the repeated lace edge. Beads are placed using the “add-as-you-go” method, with crochet hook or thin wire. You will discover just how simple it is to add a little glimmer to your lace work!

Materials:
One skein of Handmaiden Casbah Sock or 350 yards of fingering weight yarn. (Yarn is knit at a loose gauge. If you are using a different weight of yarn, remember to use a needle size at least one millimeter thicker than suggested on the ball band.)
4.5mm needle
Approx. 200 Glass beads for sample size (or more or less, depending on the number of edge repeats in your shawl. Make sure the size of the hole is large enough for your yarn)
1mm crochet hook (This size works for the size 4/0 beads in the sample. You may need a different size, depending on your beads.)
Wool needle (to sew in ends)
Stitch marker

Finished Measurements:
Tip to tip- 76”, Height at center, excluding border- 9”, Height of border- 3”

Gauge:
22sts= 4 inches in garter stitch, after blocking.
