Fingerless mitts featuring a Greater Spotted Woodpecker hanging with his claws onto the side of a tree, inspired by the woodpeckers in my father’s Suffolk garden.

You will need approximately 30gm Rowan 4ply pure wool for the background, along with about 10gm black and oddments of white, red, dark grey and beige. Of course, any brand of 4ply weight wool, cashmere or cotton could be used instead.

The bird and tree are knitted using the intarsia method, but I guess the gloves could be made plain and the motifs added afterwards by using swiss darning.

Typed instructions for the shaping and both colour and black-and-white symbol charts are included in the PDF knitting pattern for the mitts.
