02.26.14 - My brightly colored rainbow batt became this slightly muted rainbow hat. I really like the color effect from the twined knitting. It’ll be a super warm, soft hat.
Twining the Z twist handspun slightly untwisted the yarn and it became even softer. I can see that using an S twist yarn would make it tighter twist and potentially cause an overly firm knit.
I started with the called for size 9 needles. This worked well for the double-knit cuff, but once I started the twining, I was unable to meet the required gauge. I kept decreasing the needle size and finally ended up with a size 6 US.
I was able to come to terms with this knitting by putting the ball of yarn on my yarn buddy, pulling out about 6 feet of yarn and spinning it on the yarn buddy in a counterclockwise motion about 60 times. This twisted the two yarn strands together. Then as I knit, the twining motion caused the two yarn strands to untwist. This was much easier than untwisting the yarn after knitting.
I do love the hat, but I’m not certain I’ll ever do twined knitting again. It took several days to do a hat that would have taken one evening normally.
02.22.14 - My own handspun, specifically spun S twist and plied Z twist so I can try twined knitting. So soft!
I wanted it the yarn to line up color wise, instead of being all smooched together, but apparently I got distracted and didn’t keep the plies in the same order. Oh well, I like it anyway!
Started knitting - love the double knit cuff on the hat. Really disliking the constant untangling required every row with this twined knitting. Guess I’ll do this hat and then say I have done twined knitting. Never need to do it again!
