Based on the Monkey Sock pattern, but with Margene’s picot cuff, knits substituted for the purls, and a round toe instead of a wedge toe.
I started on US 1.5 needles, but I could tell they were going to be too big, so I went down to size US 1. The size is fine, but I should have done the heel flap a little longer to make them easier to put on.

I’m finally in the home stretch on my first Monkey sock. Well, it’s technically a Monkey-like sock. I did a picot edge ala Margene – this is truly an inspired touch. I really didn’t care for the ribbing on the original pattern, but the picot edge is perfect. Otherwise, I was going to make the sock according to the pattern – but after I did a couple of repeats, I decided that I didn’t like how the purl stitches looked with this yarn, so I frogged it and am redoing it with knits instead of purls. It makes a less distinctive pattern, but with this yarn, I like it better. And as long as I’ve already made a bunch of modifications, I think I’ll do a round toe instead of a wedge toe. What the heck – I’m feeling radical.
Aren’t the blues lovely? It’s Trekking XXL – a gift from Heather.

One “sorta” monkey sock was finished last night, and I cast on for the second. So far it looks like I’m going to be good on matching the stripes for the second sock. That was a little difficult – I didn’t take good notes on where I started with the color repeat, and since I folded the loose end of the yarn into the picot cuff, I couldn’t even see what my cast-on end looked like.
It fits pretty well – it might have been better with a slightly taller heel flap to make it easier to get on and off, but I think it will be fine.

My Sort-of-Monkey socks are done. And they match pretty well, other than having different colors at the very top of the toe.
Some days I felt like this project would go on forever. The first sock went pretty quickly, but the second just dragged, and I had a really hard time with it. I don’t know if it was second-sock-syndrome, or just that I used it as a portable take-along project and didn’t really work on it on a regular basis. Each time I’d pick it up, I’d only have time to do a few rows, and I spent a lot of the time just figuring out where I was and remembering the pattern.
But I finally got to the toe at the last SnB, so last night I just sat down and finished, and I can finally wear them!
Pattern: Based on Cookie A.’s Monkey Sock, but with Margene’s picot cuff, knits substituted for the purls, and a round toe.
