Notes

I created my own charts to work from, since I had difficulty visualizing what was going on from the original pattern. I uploaded a PDF of my charts and worksheet here, for anyone who might find them useful.

Basically the pattern consists of a center inverted triangle motif that is repeated vertically up the center of the shawl, and an edge motif which extends out from each side of the triangles to make “V”s.

The challenge is that the edge motifs are a 6-row repeat (including WS rows), while the center motif is a 28-row repeat. Since 6 does not go into 28 evenly, the edge motifs for each new “V” are offset from the previous one, so there’s no true repeat to follow horizontally across a row.

Needlediva created an excellent chart which modifies the pattern so that you have easy-to-follow horizontal repeats, which would make this pattern pretty much a no-brainer. But it also changes the pattern slightly - the stockinette sections between the lace panels are 2 stitches thicker, and the lace pattern of the edges will be the same all the way across a section, instead of staggered like the original pattern, which will change the look slightly. It will be equally as lovely, though. If you don’t care about the difference, you may want to use her chart.

I, however, am stubborn, and wanted to do the pattern as it was written.

It turned out not to be bad at all once I realized how the repeats worked. I figured out a method to work across the rows that worked really well - it just requires following one chart for the center panel, and another for the edges - I used 2 row markers with my magnetic chart board to keep track (see photo at left).

The lace pattern is simple and very easy to read, so it’s not difficult to see if you’ve gotten off-track.

The finished size is 59” across the top, and 26” down the center.

I love how it looks, but the top edge rolls like crazy.
