Notes

This was my first sock from the book (besides the learning sock), and I didn’t understand why the number of stitches given for this pattern (42) didn’t match the master numbers table for the size given in the pattern (38). I emailed Cat to see if it was an error, and she kindly wrote back to let me know that it was different from the table because the specified yarn is woolen-spun rather than worsted-spun, and the extra stitches are necessary.

Since I was using a worsted-spun yarn, I decided to adjust the stitches to match the master table, which was a good choice because otherwise they would definitely have been too big.

If you adjust the mid-foot numbers for this sock, it looks like it will work best if you have a multiple of 4 stitches + 2, so that the moss stitch pattern will work out correctly.

Modifications:

Adjusted pattern to 38 stitches mid-foot.

Did a whirlpool toe instead of a standard toe. I first attempted Judy’s Magic Cast On to do the standard toe, but trying to do that cast-on with DPNs made me want to kill someone, and I was too stubborn to drag out some circs for the cast-on, so I just did the whirlpool toe instead. Since I prefer star toes when making top-down socks, I’ll probably like this better anyway.

Since I have plenty of yarn, I did an extra pattern repeat for the cuff.

The cuff was going to be pretty large for my ankle (probably because of the garter and moss stitch pattern), so I decreased 4 stitches at the start of the cuff.

Size-wise, they fit fine, although a half inch shorter in the foot would have been nicer – I like my socks to be really snug. (A drawback of knitting toe-up – you can’t just rip out the toe and make it shorter… unless you want to cut the yarn and reknit it the opposite direction.) But they’ll be fine for wearing around the house. Since they’re from worsted-weight yarn, they’re a bit thick for wearing in shoes, other than boots.

The construction is very interesting – they are knit toe-up, and the increases are done on the instep rather than on the heel. They do have a reinforced heel like you’d have on a heel flap, but you don’t have to pick up stitches at the gusset (yay!)

New experiences (besides the construction): Figure 8 cast-on and sewn bind-off.
